It’s Hard Out Here for a Freelancer

When I first began as a freelance writer, my old boss said, “Great, now you can work 24 hours a day!” He was only half-kidding, of course. Conversely, as a freelancer with no set hours, I could do crazy things like go see a movie in the middle of the afternoon (I’ve done it twice ...

Catapult: Capture Video Direct to iPod

I’ve had only a few chances to absorb the news that’s coming out of NAB in Las Vegas. The RED camera (still in development) seems to be a big hit, especially if you’re reading the sleepless Mike Curtis’s HD for Indies blog. But if you’re not as excited about spending $17,500 for a cutting-edge HD ...

17-inch MacBook Pro Announced

I’ve had my head buried in work lately, so I almost missed Apple’s announcement of the 17-inch MacBook Pro yesterday. Although not a surprise that it would be coming, I’m happy to see a few features that make this laptop a great portable video studio: FireWire 800, a 4x double-layer SuperDrive, three USB ports, and ...

GarageBand 3.0.2 Update Released

Apple has posted GarageBand 3.0.2, which, according to the company’s logorrheic announcement, “addresses issues with video handling, podcast exporting, and importing QuickTime markers. It also addresses a number of other minor issues.” The update is a 32.2 MB download via Software Update or as a 30 MB stand-alone download.

Seattle 911 Events Map

This is cool: Seattle emergency events map, a live Google map of Seattle that shows locations of emergency calls in Seattle. The creator wrote it in February “after watching a building burn across the water from my office today.”

Combining iMovie HD Projects

Graham from Sydney, Australia asks: iMovieHD/iDVD5 VQS Pge 221 sidebar. I work in PAL HDV 1080i and tried dragging one of my 5 10 minute movies to a new imovieHD project and got message ‘the file could not be imported. QuickTime couldn’t parse it”. My workaround to get a combo movie was to first convert ...

Democratic Narrative and Looking Beyond Self

Markos at DailyKos looks at an essay by Michael Thomasky of The American Prospect about the need for the Democratic party to have a philosophy. It’s good stuff, touching on something that I feel in my bones but which I haven’t seen articulated: we’re no longer looking toward the common good. So what does Tomasky ...

Add Titles to the Middle of Clips

iMovie HD 6 has a great new—but subtle—feature. In earlier versions, if you wanted to add a title to the middle of a clip, you needed to first position your playhead, choose Split Clip at Playhead from the Edit menu, and then drag a title to that location. In the new version, simply position the ...

Grinder Update

(If this isn’t a bloggish post, I don’t know what is. Tomorrow: belly button lint!) After receiving the replacement part for my broken Solis Maestro Plus grinder on Friday, I’ve had no luck grinding coffee: it’s all too coarse. So I called Cafe West (the company that handles repairs for the Solis grinders) and spoke ...

No CD Import in iMovie HD 6

I just realized that iMovie HD 6 no longer lets you import music directly from a compact disc. It’s not that surprising, since Apple wants everyone to use iTunes for everything. And it’s not surprising that I just ran across this, considering that I hardly ever buy CDs, much less pull music from them directly ...
