iChat Location Setter

Jason Snell at Macworld magazine wrote a clever AppleScript script for setting iChat’s status to reflect where he (or more specifically, his PowerBook) is located: iChat Knows Where I Am. [I know, this isn’t necessarily iMovie related, but I’ve been covering a gamut of topics over the past year, including my latest book iChat AV ...

More on iMovie-Edited Tarnation

Wired News ran a story about Tarnation, Jonathan Caouette’s iMovie-edited film now playing at Sundance: Here’s the Price of Fame: $218.32. Filmmaker Gus van Sant, who has signed on as an executive producer, is quoted as saying: “People assumed that one day film would be as accessible and inexpensive as writing, and now it practically ...

iLife ’04 with iMovie 4

Apple announced iLife ’04 at Macworld Expo today, which includes iMovie 4, iPhoto 4, iDVD 3, iTunes 4, and GarageBand, a cool new program for creating music. iMovie 4 doesn’t look much different, but that’s just on the surface. Most significant is the capability to trim clips directly in the Timeline – simply drag the ...

See Me at Macworld Expo

I’m doing a presentation on Graduating from iMovie to Final Cut Express as part of the Users Conference, Wednesday from 11:00 to 12:15 in room 133. Shortly thereafter, at 1:00, come visit me at the Peachpit Press booth (#1917) where I’ll be signing copies of my books and chatting about iMovie, iChat AV, and Palm ...

Feature-length Sundance film “Tarnation”

According to director John Cameron Mitchell, a feature-length movie that is set to appear at Sundance titled Tarnation was edited entirely in iMovie.

Digital Film Restoration

Interesting article at about John D. Lowry, whose company restores damaged film – in this case, the Indiana Jones movies.

iMovie 3.5 on the Way?

Think Secret reports that we may see an iMovie 3.5 soon – perhaps at Macworld Expo in January? Of course, only Apple knows, and Apple isn’t saying.

iMovie 3 VQS 40% Off at Amazon

I noticed today that Amazon is selling the book at 40% off, for $11.99. If you haven’t picked up a copy, or if you’re looking for a good holiday gift, this is a pretty good deal. While you’re there, and while I’m shilling anyway, consider the other books I’ve released this year: Palm Organizers, Third ...

Mac OS X 10.3.1 Solves FileVault Issue

Apple released Mac OS X 10.3.1 late yesterday, which apparently fixes the data loss issue with FileVault. I still don’t think FileVault is ready for prime time, but this is progress, at least.

iMovie 3 and FileVault

Apple has released a TechNote explaining that using Mac OS X 10.3 Panther’s new FileVault data-encryption feature can affect performance. The issue is that FileVault encrypts your Home folder, which by default is where iMovie saves its projects (in the Movies folder). The Home folder becomes one large encrypted file, so anything stored within must ...
