Metaphor for My Brain
Walking home from the bus stop tonight, I came up with a metaphor for my brain. You see, I’m often frustrated by the way I work. I spend an inordinate amount of time thinking and mulling, rewriting article leads, figuring out in what order things should appear, trying to determine which things are more important ...
10 Secrets of iMovie ’09
In conjunction with my Macworld review of iMovie ’09, I’ve published an article at TidBITS that looks closer at a bunch of new tips and features in the new version: 10 Secrets of iMovie ’09. For example, did you know you can use a second monitor to preview your movie and use the entire top ...
My iMovie ’09 Review at Macworld
Macworld today published my review of iMovie ’09, in which I give the new version 4 mice for its improvements. I haven’t been able to say much about iMovie since I got the assignment, since I needed to remain impartial until the review was out. But now I can say: I like iMovie ’09 a ...
Say Goodbye to iMovie HD 6
Many longtime iMovie users weren’t happy when iMovie ’08 came out, because the new version was completely different from what they’d grown accustomed to. But it wasn’t a big deal, because Apple made iMovie HD 6 available as a free download to anyone who owned iMovie ’08. (If you already had iMovie HD 6 on ...
It’s iMovie ’09 Day!
Apple released iLife ’09 today, which includes the much-improved iMovie ’09. I’m eager to get my paws on it, but my copy doesn’t arrive until Wednesday morning. In the meantime, Jason Snell at Macworld scored a copy of the suite at a nearby Apple Store this morning and shares samples from iMovie’s new Stabilization feature: ...
iDVD Unchanged from ’08 Version
Quick note to say that iDVD remains basically untouched in iLife ’09. It’s now just “iDVD,” not “iDVD ’09”, even. Not surprising. In fact, I wondered if iDVD would even be a part of iLife this time around.
iMovie ’09 – Fixes Everything?
I just got out of the Macworld Expo keynote where Phil Schiller introduced iLife ’09, iWork ’09, and the new 17-inch MacBook Pro. (That’s it? Really? Apparently so.) iLife ’09 isn’t shipping until the end of January, but from what Schiller demonstrated, iMovie ’09 looks like the “we fixed everything” release. I’m really excited to ...
Ellie in the Seattle Times
I wrote a review of the Nikon D90 camera for the Seattle Times (see Nikon, Canon push digital still cameras to a new level, Nov. 15, 2008), and included an image of Ellie to demonstrate the camera's low-light capabilities.
Importing Video from a FireWire Camcorder to an Aluminum MacBook
(Also posted at TidBITS.) Apple’s newest consumer laptop is a package full of shiny power, but it also lacks a FireWire port. That means no FireWire Target Disk Mode, no support for external hard drives with FireWire interfaces, and no support for digital camcorders that have FireWire (or i.Link) ports. In an email response to ...
