Valley of Light

My wife and I spent the weekend near Leavenworth, Washington at a cozy cabin with this as the view. Although I didn’t know if there would be much of a sunset the first night, the sun shone horizontally down a nearby valley for a wonderful show. Having a glass of wine at hand didn’t hurt, either. About the photo: I merged three exposures using Lightroom’s built-in HDR tool and then edited it further in Lightroom.

Girl on the Rock

My daughter looks up on a gorgeous summer Saturday hike to Wallace Falls, outside Gold Bar, Washington.

Camping Under Stars

We signed up for the Family Camp at Northwest Trek, which includes a single overnight camp, access to the park after-hours, a special tram tour to see the animals, and a hot breakfast the next morning.

I took advantage of the clear (and hot) weather to set up my tripod after everyone had gone to bed and attempt some starry sky shots. I have a lot of respect for people that do this well; it’s a great reminder that continued practice is always good. If nothing else, it’s a great way to spend some quiet time in the summer.

Density: Redwoods Panorama

One of the things that’s hard to wrap your mind around in the Redwoods, especially on a first visit, is just how dense these massive forests are. This is a panorama stitched from 13 photos, shot at Stout Grove near Jededih Smith Redwood State Park Campground.

Lush, Newhalem Creek

A short hike from Newhalem Campground in the North Cascades mountains, Newhalem Creek has been a frequent photo stop for me over the years. The creek originates just around the bend here, but this year the water was so high that I couldn’t explore as far up as I usually do.

The water volume, plus a steady drizzle of rain, made for an especially lush photo opportunity.
