Basic iLife ’06 Update Advice

People are starting to get their copies of iLife ’06, so now is a good time to pass along one of the best pieces of upgrade advice I can give:

Before upgrading, rename your existing iLife applications.

The installer looks for “iMovie HD”, for example, and will upgrade that copy. If you want to revert back to your existing version for whatever reason, or you just want it for testing, simply rename the application to “iMovie HD 5” before running the iLife ’06 installer. It’s not a bad idea to copy it to another hard drive as a backup, just in case. (But you’re already diligent about backups, right? Right??)

I’ve just started playing with iMovie HD 6 and iDVD 6, and will report more of my findings here.
