Toby Young’s Slate Diary

This week I’ve enjoyed A weeklongjournal froma writer in Los Angeles, a series of dispatches in Slate written by British writer Toby Young. I was surprised to learn that the Cheescake Factory rates highly among restaurants (this coming from a former food critic), and that good Hollywood paprazzi work more surreptitiously than what we expect. It’s an entertaining read.

What I can’t figure out is why people think the Cheesecake Factory serves good cheesecake. It’s horrid stuff.
(Of course, I’ve ranted about this for years and people look at me like I have penises growing out of my ears. “Look at that poor soul.” But then I took my wife to a family event where Cousin Mary Lou brought her wickedly decadent homemade cheesecakes – one chocolate, one blueberry. At last, she understood from whence I ranted.)
