Time to reveal one of my secret, unfulfilled obsessions: Sony’s AIBO robotic dog. I think they’re incredibly cool, and it’s been interesting to see them advance over the last couple of years.
Unfortunately, they’re still a high-ticket item that I just haven’t had the cash to shell out for, so my hands-on experience with AIBO is a brief demonstration at a Sony store in San Francisco. But I find them compelling. The first model cost $2,500, and the initial production run sold out via pre-orders in 20 minutes in Japan (3,000 units), and four days in the U.S. (2,000 units). The price has gone down to $1,600 for the latest edition, but that’s still too rich for me.
Do geeks dream of electronic pups? This one does.
