Hey, I Am “the People”!

I’m seeing Republicans talk about being uniters, but their words are betraying them. One thing being repeated by congresscritters and the President is that the proposed Constitutional amendment “defining” marriage as between a man and a woman is important because it’s the will of “the people.” Bush said in his press conference:

“On a matter of such importance, the voice of the people must be heard. Activist courts have left the people with one recourse.”

And in the New York Times, Senator John Cornyn, Republican of Texas, parroted the party line by saying:

“We cannot simply sit idly by, in my opinion, and let activist judges radically redefine the institution of marriage when it stands in stark relief and defiance of the will of the American people.”

I had no idea that the People had already expressed their view(s)! It seems to me that many of the People support gay marriage, especially in light of the fact that those People are homosexuals. My wife’s aunt is certainly one of the People, as is her female partner — who recently celebrated their 20th (wow! and applause!) anniversary. And I certainly consider myself one of the People, even though I’m a heterosexual Democrat. (And married, and not feeling threatened at all by the Republicans’ perceived Gay Menace.)

What the Republicans are saying is, “The People who think like us and act like us (and want to be like us) are the only People that matter.” The People who are heterosexual and vote conservative, never mind the obscene debt (or wealth), the high divorce rates, the numbers of fucked-up kids who have to ping-pong between multiple parental units, etc., etc.

I’m hoping that enough Republicans will realize that they’re alienating the People, and that the People are getting tired of their shit. And I’m hoping they realize it after their bigoted leader is voted out of the Oval Office.
